K11 Art Foundation Presents: Lunar Water

Their First Generative Art Exhibition

Date: 4-7 September 2024

Opening Time: 11am - 6pm
Address: 636-4 Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul

K11 Art Foundation is excited to announce Cheng Ran's upcoming Generative Art project, Self-Miracle (2024), which is available for collection at a special value exclusively for a limited time until 5th September 2024. This project represents a complete renewal of his previous artwork, "In Course of the Miraculous" (2015), a 9-hour film. Cheng Ran, in collaboration with SUN BOHAN, uses generative technology to explore themes of adventure, time, and memory. The artwork captures an image snapshot every second of the film installation, creating unique variations that transcend the limitations of time. Your support will help the artists with their future projects in Generative Art, in line with K11 Art Foundation's mission of nurturing artists in this field and solidifying their voices in the global artistic conversation.

Self-miracle, 2024

Cheng Ran’s latest digital creation, Self-miracle (2024), is a generative artwork inspired by his epic 9-hour film In Course of the Miraculous (2015). The film premiered at the Istanbul Biennale in 2015 and received much critical acclaim. Cheng presents a 9-hour film based on three recorded events that end mysteriously as the film develops. For this special exhibition, Cheng has completely renewed his artwork by utilising experimental film imagery as its visual foundation. Through the application of algorithms and generative coding techniques, the time element in the film is deconstructed and re-generated, reverting the image back to its simplest forms, patterns and colour fields. This breaks the conventional boundaries of time, allowing each snapshot to be rearranged and regenerated to construct an entirely new temporal landscape.

About

Cheng Ran

Cheng Ran (b. 1981, China) finished his residency programme at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Netherlands, in 2014. In 2017, he founded the artist institution MARTIN GOYA BUSINESS. Cheng focuses on new media, and his artworks mainly consist of videos and films. At the beginning of his career, his films were not precise or cinematic. Instead, he merely wished to convey personal and private feelings. Over time, this form of expression developed to a professional level and he started to discuss larger issues in his artwork. The themes of his videos often revolve around the unsolvable problems in life, such as identity and mortality. Cheng has received numerous awards in the “Best Video Artist” categories and also has previously participated in the Istanbul Biennale (2015), exhibited at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2014), the New Museum, New York (2016) and performed at the Sydney Opera House, Sydney (2019).
